Spring Hill, FL — A construction worker was hit and killed by a vehicle that drove over a barrel barrier and slammed into him Tuesday, November 8, 2011. The fatal accident occurred at a road project in a closed westbound lane of Spring Hill Drive, just east of Sparing Park Way, reported the St. Petersburg Times.

The Florida Highway Patrol reported that Steven Thompson, 28, of Dade County was working on the road project when a Brooksville woman failed to merge into one of the open lanes, and drove her 2005 Dodge Ram along the closed lane and straight into the road project.

The truck driver, Karen Macchione, then hit Thomas with the front left area of her truck, which sent him flying into the air.

Responding emergency crews rushed Thompson to Spring Hill Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Macchione was uninjured in the wreck, but her truck sustained about $2,000 in damage.

The FHP is awaiting toxicology reports before deciding what charges they will press against Macchione.

Investigations are underway.
