Carteret County, NC — A truck driver is facing charges after his vehicle hit a Carteret County school bus, injuring over a dozen students Monday, November 7, 2011. The traffic accident took place around 3:45 p.m. at Professional Park Driver and Troon Way, reported WITN.com.

Police reported that the school bus was on Professional Park Drive, when the small truck hit the school bus near its right rear axle, causing the axle to separate from the bus’ frame.

The driver of the truck, Milton Adams of Beaufort, reportedly ran a stop sign, leading to the collision.

Responding emergency crews transported 24 students from East Carteret High School to Carteret General Hospital for treatment of injuries. Adams was also hospitalized with injuries.

Officials stated that all the injuries appeared to be minor.

Adams was cited for failing to yield to the right of way. But, Adams asserts that his brakes failed and he was not able to stop at the intersection.

Investigations are underway.
