Lewes, DE — A work-related accident left a DelDOT worker dead Wednesday morning, October 5, 2011, when his lawnmower hit a utility pole guy cable. The fatal workplace accident occurred at around 10:20 a.m. at Hudson and Log Cabin Hill roads near Lewes, reported The Daily Times.

Delaware Department of Transportation maintenance employee Eric Givens, 24, of Laurel, was reportedly operating a lawnmower when it struck the utility pole guy cable, which then hit an electrical line.

Givens was killed as a result, and 4,700 electrical customers in the area lost power.

State police are investigating the fatal work-related accident.

In a statement reported by The Daily Times, Secretary of Transportation Shailen Bhatt said: “We are all saddened by this tragedy, and our hearts go out to Eric’s family and many friends. By necessity, many of DelDOT’s employees routinely operate equipment and work in locations that involve significant risk. This is why safety is always our chief priority, and why we deeply appreciate the work our employees do every day for the people of Delaware,” Bhatt said. “We are cooperating fully with the authorities to find out what happened and to do whatever we can to prevent it from ever occurring again.”
