Minneapolis, MN — The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Target Corporation have expanded a voluntary recall of step stools with storage over fall hazards the defective products pose to consumers. The CPSC announced the nationwide recall on August 23, 2011.

Target Corp. expanded the recall after discovering that wooden step stools can break apart or collapse under the weight of the user, which poses a fall hazard to consumers.

Twenty-seven incidents of the stools breaking or collapsing have been received by Target. Among those incidents, 14 of them involved children; eight involved adults and five reports did not indicate the user’s age. As a result, two adults sustained fractured wrists, while another fractured her hip and pelvis. Six children and one adult sustain scrapes and bruising, because of the defective product.

“The wooden step stool has two steps and comes in various colors, including natural, natural and red, white, pink, blue and honey. The Circo step stool has a lid on the bottom step that lifts to provide storage. The Do Your Room (DYR) step stool has a lid on the top step that lifts to provide storage. The step stools measure approximately 13″ H x 13 5/8″ W x 14 1/8″ D. The Circo brand name or DYR brand name and UPC numbers are printed on a label found underneath the step stool,” reported the CPSC.

Consumers are advised to return the step stools to any Target for a full refund.
