Danville, CA — A “freak accident” during a church retreat at the beach hospitalized a Danville teenager who was buried in a 6-foot-deep sand tunnel on Saturday, June 25, 2011, reported KTVU.

Sixty teenagers and adults were visiting Santa Cruz for a camping trip weekend with their church, Creekside Community Church in Alamo.

According to officials, two boys dug a 6-foot-deep tunnel in the sand when it suddenly collapsed on 17-year-old Ryan Buchanan, burying him for about 15 minutes.

Lifeguards and Buchanan’s friends frantically began to dig him out from underneath the sand.

Once Buchanan was pulled from the sand, he was airlifted to Valley Medical Center in San Jose, where sand was removed from his airway passage. Buchanan has responded to people’s voices and has active brain waves, leaving loved ones with high hopes.
