Palm Desert, CA — A vehicle traveling in the wrong direction slammed head-on into a semi-truck and ignited a fire, leaving one motorist dead on Interstate 10. The fatal automobile accident occurred early Tuesday morning, June 21, 2011 at around 3:45 a.m., on I-10 just west of Washington Street in the unincorporated area of Riverside County, near Palm Desert reported KPSP Local 12.

According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), a Honda Accord was traveling west in the eastbound lanes of the freeway, when it slammed head-on into a semi-truck in the No. 3 lane.

“As a result of the collision, both vehicles became fully engulfed in fire while blocking the #1 and #2 eastbound lanes of I-10,” CHP Officer Joe Zagorski said to KPSP. “All eastbound and westbound lanes of I-10 were closed while CAL Fire personnel extinguished the fire.”

Preliminary investigations have led the CHP to believe that the driver of the Honda was killed instantly. The driver of the semi-truck, 41-year-old Ontario resident Raul Santiago, and his passenger was identified as 44-year-old Oliver Obannon of La Quinta, were uninjured in the wreck.

The exact cause of the crash is under investigation. Toxicology reports will determine if alcohol or drugs were involved in the deadly automobile accident.

Investigations are underway.
