Parma Heights, OH — A construction accident claimed the life of a laborer Wednesday morning, June 15, 2011, along Stumph Road. The fatal construction accident occurred between Pearl Road and Snow Road, in a hole that a track hoe had dug up, reported Fox 8.

According to the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office, the deceased laborer has been identified as Douglas Patterson, 53, of Lake County.

Investigations lead police to believe that an excavating claw attached to the end of the track hoe hit Patterson, leaving him with fatal injuries. Patterson is believed to be the only one in the hole at the time of the construction accident.

Patterson was employed as a laborer for a private contractor, who was hired by Cuyahoga County for a repaving and infrastructure project along Stumph Road.

Investigations into the fatal construction accident are underway. The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health (OSHA) will also be conducting an investigation of its own.

This isn’t the first time OSHA has been called to inspect a construction project overseen by the general contractor, Fabrizi Trucking and Paving. According to OSHA records, over the last five years OSHA has conducted 12 inspections, which resulted in citations being issued to the contractor. Trench safety has been a reoccurring issue, according to several citations.
