New Smyrna Beach, FL — A pilot and co-pilot are lucky to be alive after a strange mid-air accident shattered the glass of a small plane Monday morning, June 6, 2011. The accident occurred around 11 a.m. at about 260 knots around 1,200 feet over Lake Ashby, reported Central Florida News 13.

Authorities reported that the pilot told paramedics that the canopy glass suddenly exploded, causing the pilot to make an emergency landing at New Smyrna Beach.

Pilot Tony Dawson and his co-pilot, Arlon Guin, suffered facial injuries in the accident, but otherwise is in good condition.

According to the FAA, the plane is an experimental fixed-wing single-engine plane registered to Q Ventures out of Wilmington, Del.

It is still unknown what caused the window to shatter, but officials believe a bird may have hit the small plane.
