Vineland, NJ — A toddler was found dead after falling into a 5-foot-deep grease trap behind a New Jersey market Tuesday afternoon, May 17, 2011. The freak accident occurred behind Cidra’s Supermarket on North Seventh Street at around 2 p.m., reported The Ashbury Park Press.

According to police officials, the 3-year-old boy fell into an uncovered grease pit behind the supermarket.

The iron manhole cover to the pit had reportedly been moved off the top of the pit earlier that day, so that employees could dump grease into it.

Responding rescue crews used 6-foot and 8-foot pike poles to stir around in the waste to locate the child. They used a hook on one of the poles to grab the child and bring him to the surface. A relative to the child saw him fall into the pit.

Before rescue crews arrived, several restaurant workers tried to rescue the child, but were unable to. One man even got into the grease pit to search for the boy.

The toddler was identified as the child of one of the market owners.

No charges have been filed at this time. Investigations are ongoing.
