Dallas, TX — Eighteen people were rushed to area hospitals following an accident at a DART train station in Dallas on Thursday, May 5, 2011. An escalator malfunction sent people tumbling down to the floor at around 12:45 p.m. at the Mockingbird Station in the 5400 block of East Mockingbird Lane, reported WFAA.
About 100 Thompson Middle School students were on a field trip at the train station, when the escalator malfunctioned as they were taking the escalator to the bottom floor to catch a train. The escalator apparently just “gave way.”
The students went tumbling to the bottom, falling on top of one another. Teachers pushed the emergency stop button, but they continued downward.
Four ambulances from Dallas Fire-Rescue arrived at the scene and rushed seven students to Children’s Medical Center for treatment of injuries. One student reportedly sustained a broken leg, while others suffered minor injuries. Two adults were also transported to Parkland Memorial Hospital for medical treatment. In all, 18 people were injured in the accident.
Students who were not hurt were taken back to school.
The Thompson Middle School students were reportedly part of a choir that was scheduled to sing at a church, and were taking the train for the experience while visiting the city.
DART officials are investigating the escalator accident.
