St. Paul, MN — A firearms training exercise went terribly wrong when a Lino Lakes police officer was accidentally shot in the stomach Thursday afternoon, May 5, 2011 in Coon Rapids, reported the Minnesota Public Radio News.

According to officials, the unidentified officer was among three officers who were shooting handguns as part of a training exercise on the Anoka County Law Enforcement Range. A bullet hit the unidentified officer, but details surrounding how the shooting happened are still under investigation.

Responding emergency crews rushed the officer to Hennepin County Medical Center, where he was listed in serious condition as of Friday morning.

Police officials report it is still unclear if the victim was wearing a bulletproof vest at the time.

The victim has served with Lino Lakes Police Department for the past three years.

The Coon Rapids Police Department and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension are investigating the accident.
