Albany, NY– At least 10 students were hospitalized after a two-vehicle collision involving two school buses on Monday, March 4, 2011. The school bus accident occurred at a stop sign in the city of Rensselaer where Route 9J intersects with routes 9 and 20, at around 10 a.m., reported the Times Union.

According to officials, the buses were on their way to the Palace Theatre to see “Aesop’s Fables” for a class trip when the collision occurred, but the drivers resumed their route because the accident seemed so minor. The buses continued on to the theatre, where emergency crews were called after several students began complaining of neck pain.

Responding emergency crews rushed the injured students via ambulances to area hospitals for treatment. Officials reported that two students suffered moderate injuries, while the others sustained bumps and bruises.

The children on the buses reportedly attend Castleton Elementary School.

The school’s principal and nurse were dispatched to the scene and determined that none of the injuries appeared serious.

Parents were notified of the collision via the school’s emergency contact system.

Police are looking into whether the drivers followed proper procedure in the rear-end collision. Investigations are underway.
