Los Angeles, CA—The pilot of a helicopter that crashed into a building and caught fire in EL Segundo Sunday morning, March 13, 2011 was hospitalized for multiple injuries. The helicopter accident occurred around 9:40 a.m. at the Raytheon plant located at 2000 E. El Segundo Boulevard, as reported by KTLA.

According to officials, the helicopter was lifting a large air-conditioning unit off one of the buildings at the office complex, when the pilot lost control of the aircraft and crashed.

The helicopter landed on a patio area of the building and caught fire. The first two floors of the building also caught fire as a result of the wreck.

Witness Juan Carlos Reyes told KTLA that the cable carrying the load got caught on something. Then, after swaying back and forth, the chopper went down.

The pilot of the chopper, a man in his 50’s, was pulled from the wreckage before the helicopter burst into flames. He was rushed to an area hospital by responding emergency crews for treatment of broken bones, cuts, and some burns, and is expected to recover. No other injuries were reported.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the accident.
