Washington, D.C.—A D.C. Police officer was hit by a suspected drunk driver while the officer was investigating another fatal hit-and-run involving a drunk driver. The collision occurred around midnight Sunday, February 27, 2011 on Key Bridge, as reported by MyFoxDC.com.

According to reports, the 9-year veteran D.C. police officer was investigating a hit-and-run, which involved a motor scooter at around 10:30 p.m., when he was hit by a man driving a car.

The driver of the car remained at the scene of the crash, and was arrested and charged with a DUI.

The initial accident occurred while the scooter driver was walking his disabled scooter across the bridge into Virginia, and was struck by a silver Mercury SUV. The driver of the SUV fled the scene after the crash.

The scooter driver was rushed to the hospital, where he later died.

The Maryland State Patrol pulled over the SUV driver in Maryland, after they spotted the vehicle driving on three flat tires. The State Police were alerted of the hit-and-run and arrested the SUV driver and charged him with a DUI.

The nature of the officer’s injuries was not reported.

Full investigations into both crashes are underway.
