Burlington County, NJ—A violent four vehicle accident killed one woman and injured 12 others on Monday afternoon, February 21, 2011. The fatal automobile accident occurred at Route 130 and Cooper Street at around 1 p.m., as reported by PhillyBurbs.com and the Trentonian.

According to the Burlington County Prosecutor’s Office, a SUV was traveling south on the highway when it collided with a Mercedes car, which was also traveling south and approaching the intersection. The impact of the crash pushed the Mercedes off the road, where it hit a pedestrian that was waiting inside a bus shelter. The Mercedes also struck a light stand that was thrown onto the highway.

The SUV overturned onto its roof and slammed into two other vehicles at the intersection.

A female passenger inside the SUV, who has not been publicly identified, was killed in the collision. She was cut from the wreckage and rushed her to Copper University Hospital in Camden for treatment. She was pronounced dead at 4:30 p.m.

Responding emergency crews rushed four other victims, two of them were airlifted, to Cooper University Hospital in Camden for treatment of injuries. Seven additional victims were transported to Lourdes Medical Center of Burlington County in Willingboro. Several of the injuries were reported to be considered extremely serious.

Two young male passengers in the SUV were pulled from the wreckage and received medical attention at the scene.

Edgewater Park police, the New Jersey State Police and the Prosecutor’s Office is investigating the crash.
