Madison County, KY—A Kentucky State Trooper was rushed to the hospital after being hit by an ambulance while working the scene of a fatal crash. The automobile accident occurred on U.S. 52 at the Estill-Madison County line around 6:45 a.m., on Wednesday, February 16, 2011, as reported by LEX18.

According to officials, an elderly driver of a Ford Taurus reportedly fell asleep while behind the wheel, causing the vehicle to swerve and hit a Volkswagen Beetle. The collision killed the elderly man and injured his female passenger. The passenger was taken to the hospital with undisclosed injuries.

While the KSP trooper Chris Chenault was working the scene, he was injured when an ambulance at the scene rolled backwards, injuring the trooper’s legs. Chenault was rushed to Central Baptist Hospital for treatment.

The names of the victims involved in the initial accident have not been released. The female passenger in the Taurus is reportedly from Bourbon County and the driver of the Beetle is from Estill County.
