New York, NY (New York City Accident News)—A 71-year-old Bronx man was killed when an elderly motorist failed to notice him walking behind his car in a Co-Op City parking lot Monday, Jan. 10, 2011, as reported by the New York Daily News. Police have not charged the unidentified driver in connection with the accident, saying that by the time the motorist realized he struck the victim, identified as Jerrold Chaleff, he was already pinned beneath his car. According to data provided through the NHTSA’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System, 306 pedestrians were killed in traffic accidents throughout the state of New York during the year 2009. Of those victims, 25 lost their lives in Bronx crashes.

Reports indicated Chaleff was walking through the parking lot at Bartow Mall Shopping Center in Co-Op City when he was struck and subsequently run over by a 79-year old man’s vehicle. Chaleff, who had battled pancreatic cancer for the last two years, suffered fatal injuries in the Bronx accident and was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim’s son, Fred Chaleff responded to the mall’s parking lot upon being informed that his father had been killed in an accident.

“I’m in disbelief… He was fighting for the last two years, so this is really a shock,” Fred Chaleff said, adding that he forgives the motorist involved in the crash. “I don’t have any ill will toward him… I did tell the officer to let him know that I am not mad at him… I didn’t want this guy being torn up thinking that people hated him… I didn’t want him to feel devastated, like me.” There were a 1,067 fatal New York traffic crashes, resulting in a total of 1,156 causalities, reported in 2009. Ninety-six of those victims reportedly ranged from 65 to 74 years of age.
