San Francisco, CA (Bay Area Auto Accident Attorney News)—Maintaining a focus on California accident statistics collected over the last four years, Allstate insurance company found Wednesday, December 15th to be the most dangerous day for motorists commuting throughout the state. According to information provided by KYMA, the number of automobile accident claims received by insurance giant Allstate leaps more than 20 percent on that particular day. Whether roadway distractions or winter weather conditions are to blame for the elevated number of traffic crashes reported Dec. 15, California drivers are urged to heed caution behind the wheel.

Allstate reportedly receives approximately 400 California accident claims on a daily basis. However, on December 15, the insurance company receives as many as 540, representing a 20 percent jump in the total number of crash claims. Allstate contended the increased tally could be related to adverse weather conditions or possibly the fact that the sun is lower on the horizon during the winter, forcing drivers to concentrate on the road with the sun glaring in their eyes.

Distractions related to hand-held devices such as cell phones and iPods are also a hazard known to contribute to a number of car wrecks every year. According to the California Department of Motor Vehicles, “Driver distractions are the leading cause of most vehicle crashes and near-crashes. According to a study released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI), 80% of crashes and 65% of near-crashes involve some form of driver distraction.”

Additionally, Allstate spokesman Jim Klapthor explained, “With the increase in holiday traffic, not necessarily on the roads, but the increase in the shopping malls and plazas or as people are unfamiliar with your neighborhood and on your driveway, those increase in collisions can really take effect.” In 2009, there were a total of 2,816 fatal traffic crashes, resulting in a total of 3,081 casualties, reported throughout the state of California. In San Francisco County alone, 39 people lost their lives in motor vehicle accidents.
