Palm Bay, FL—Charges are pending in a double-fatal multiple vehicle crash that occurred along the southbound exit ramp from Interstate 95 onto Malabar Road in Brevard County. The deadly collision, which involved two cars, a pickup truck and a semi, happened before 10 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2010, according to information provided by Central Florida News 13.

Reports indicated that as a pickup truck was exiting I-95 onto Malabar Road, a tractor-trailer two cars back rear-ended the car in front of it, causing a multi-vehicle pile-up.

The pickup truck caught fire as the car that was hit by the semi became pinned under it on impact. A dog and two Palm Bay residents, Todd Olthoff and Marcy Olthoff, both 48 years of age, were riding in that car and lost their lives in the wreck.

Three other victims, who remained unidentified, sustained injuries in the crash and were transported to area hospitals for treatment. Two others were apparently involved in the crash, but managed to escape injury.

According to an unidentified eyewitness who was driving along I-95 when the deadly collision occurred, “All of a sudden, we’re driving and we see this car smoking. So I had to tell him to stop.”

Authorities closed I-95 in Brevard County four more than four hours, pending preliminary investigations, emergency response and post-crash cleanup efforts.

The highway reopened around 2 a.m. Investigators seem to believe following too close might have been a factor, though a full probe will be required to confirm such suspicions.
