Allentown, PA– A trench collapse in Allentown on Tuesday, January 4, 2011, killed one worker and seriously injured another. The fatal construction accident occurred around 8:30 a.m., at the west end of the Linden Street Bridge, as reported by WFMZ.com.

Police officials reported the men were replacing duct lines at the west end of the bridge, when piles of concrete and gravel cave in on them as they were in the six-foot deep trench.

Just before 10 a.m., rescue crews pulled one worker from the trench, identified as Otis Smothers. He was rushed to a local hospital in fair condition.

At 12:20 p.m., rescuers pulled the body of Michael J. Wilson, 20, of Downingtown, Chester County, from the trench. Wilson was pronounced dead at the scene.

Wilson and Otis reportedly were best friends.

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is investigating the fatal construction accident.
