Tucker, GA—Bright Water Seafood and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) voluntarily recalled 7-ounce packages of Buffalo Krab Dip and Southwest Krab Dip on Monday, Dec. 20, 2010. The food safety recall was initiated after it was discovered that the dips and spreads might be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, leave young children, elderly individuals and those with weakened immune systems vulnerable to serious or even lethal infections.

While the company’s press release maintained that healthy people usually only suffer temporary symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, the recall was issued as a safety precaution.

It was also noted that pregnant women who suffer from Listeria infections run the risk of having miscarriages or stillbirths. The company has yet to receive any reports of illnesses in connection with the tainted dips and spreads.

The Listeria contamination was discovered when the firm was conducting routine tests of its products. As Bright Water Seafood, the Georgia Department of Agriculture and FDA work to determine the source of the contamination.

The potentially dangerous dips and spreads were made available for purchase in retail stores throughout North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, North Georgia and Virginia.

According to a press release posted on the FDA’s website, “The Bright Water Buffalo Krab Dip product comes in a 7 ounce, clear plastic container marked with an UPC code 8 1971100001 4 and with an expiration date of 12/21/2010 stamped on the side. The Bright Water Southwest Krab Dip comes in a 7 ounce, clear plastic container marked with an UPC code 8 1971100002 1 and with an expiration date of 12/29/2010 stamped on the side.”

Consumers who purchased the risky 7-ounce packages of Buffalo and/or Southwest Krab Dip are urged to return the product to the place of purchase to obtain a full reimbursement.

For additional information concerning the recall, consumers are advised to contact the company at (678) 373-0989 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
