Hartford, CT—Five Griswold High School students were involved in a fatal accident in rural Connecticut on Tuesday afternoon, December 7, 2010. Four teens were tragically killed and one is in critical condition, reports MSNBC.

State police officials reported that the crash occurred in Griswold, about 40 miles southeast of Hartford. The teenage driver apparently lost control along the tree-lined road, and crashed into a tree.

Responding emergency crews pronounced three of the teens dead at the scene of the accident. A fourth injured teen was rushed to a nearby hospital, where the victim succumbed to their injuries.

The fifth teen was rushed to a hospital in critical condition. The nature of the victim’s injuries were not reported.

It is unknown if the driver of the vehicle died in the crash. The identities of the victims are currently being withheld, pending family notification. There were reportedly a senior, three juniors and a sophomore from Griswold High School inside the vehicle.

Officials are trying to determine if speed, alcohol or distracted driving were factors in the fatal crash.

A full investigation is underway.
