Kalamazoo County, MI—A 25-car pile-up caused several people to suffer minor injuries in Oshtemo Township Sunday afternoon, Dec. 5, 2010. The chain-reaction collision occurred in the westbound lanes of Interstate 94, prompting officials to close the road from the Van Buren/Kalamazoo count line to Ninth Street, as reported by WOOD TV.
According to Chicago resident Rafiah Muhammad, whose vehicle was involved in the multi-car crash, “I was hit by two different cars, and I can’t say how many there were—I saw at least 15 different cars flying off, and it got to a point that we were trying to get word to these people.”
“Don’t come to this area, because you’re gonna slide off, because you watched them over and over,” Muhammad added. Authorities were informed of the pile-up around 2:20 p.m.
“It looked like what your child is doing, you know, when they are playing with Hot Wheels… That’s what it looked like—a Hot Wheels crash. It didn’t even look like something that was realistic.”
While there were no reports of serious injuries in connection with the chain-reaction wreck, some victims’ suffered minor wounds. It was not clear if they were transported to the hospital following the crash.
Reports seemed to indicate whiteout conditions likely caused the accident. Slick roads and multiple slide-offs were reported in many Michigan counties.
Officials advised motorists to heed caution when driving in adverse weather conditions. Drivers are urged to leave approximately four seconds between their car and the vehicle driving in front of them.
Also, drivers who begin sliding on the street should steer in the direction they are sliding, as opposed to applying the breaks.
