New York, NY (Manhattan Injury Lawyer News)—A Bronx driver who attempted to flee the scene of a deadly Manhattan car crash Friday, Nov. 19, 2010 has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident. According to information provided by the New York Daily News, a car struck 67-year-old Margaret Fisher as she attempted to cross the road with her previously purchased groceries in tow. The hit-and-run driver was apprehended a short distance from the crash scene and detained on $100,000 bail. The motorist, whom authorities identified as 24-year-old Jessica Altruz, could potentially face manslaughter charges in connection with the New York City wreck.

Reports indicated Altruz’s Dodge Charger slammed into Fisher as she tried to cross W. 93rd St. near Columbus Ave. Friday afternoon. Witnesses alleged the impact forced Fisher into a parked car as her shoes and groceries were catapulted into the air. Reports did not specify whether Fisher succumbed to her injuries at the scene or if emergency responders took her to a hospital after the collision. Nonetheless, Margaret McGovern, who resides in the same apartment complex as Fisher, contended, “She was a very good-hearted person… Everyone is really upset. She had a lot of friends.”

While Altruz sped away after hitting the elderly Upper West Side pedestrian, someone managed to stop her approximately one block from the crash scene. Investigators did not appear to believe Fisher was using the crosswalk when she was struck by Altruz’s car. However, a preliminary probe also seemed to indicate Altruz was traveling at an excessive speed at the time. The hit-and-run motorist was expected to go before a grand jury on Dec. 2.
