Tree Trimmer Sustains Fatal Head Injury From Wood Chipper in Concord

Concord, CA—A tree trimmer was thrown into the air and hit his head, after his climbing rope became entangled in a wood chipper, leaving him dead on Monday, November 15, 2010. The fatal work-related accident occurred around 1:30 p.m., on Snowberry Court, near Cowell and Ygnacio Valley roads, as reported by the San Jose Mercury News.

Police officials identified the victim as 33-year-old Antonio Barajas.

Concord police Sgt. Robert Brady stated, “[the victim] was one of the guys who was feeding trees into the trimmer (on the ground). It appears he got caught in a rope that got caught in the machine.”

Barajas was apparently thrown into the air at a high rate of speed and struck his head on the wood chipper’s safety bar.

Traverso Tree Service in Walnut Creek reportedly employed the victim.

Cal/OSHA is investigating the fatal accident. A safety seminar is already planned for Traverso employees following the death.

Investigations are underway.
