Concord, CA—A tree trimmer was thrown into the air and hit his head, after his climbing rope became entangled in a wood chipper, leaving him dead on Monday, November 15, 2010. The fatal work-related accident occurred around 1:30 p.m., on Snowberry Court, near Cowell and Ygnacio Valley roads, as reported by the San Jose Mercury News.

Police officials identified the victim as 33-year-old Antonio Barajas.

Concord police Sgt. Robert Brady stated, “[the victim] was one of the guys who was feeding trees into the trimmer (on the ground). It appears he got caught in a rope that got caught in the machine.”

Barajas was apparently thrown into the air at a high rate of speed and struck his head on the wood chipper’s safety bar.

Traverso Tree Service in Walnut Creek reportedly employed the victim.

Cal/OSHA is investigating the fatal accident. A safety seminar is already planned for Traverso employees following the death.

Investigations are underway.
