Salem, MA—A freak accident at a Salem, Mass. construction site left a 38-year-old roofer dead, when a 60-pound bag of gravel plummeted over 50 feet, landing on the worker’s head. The fatal construction accident occurred on Saturday, November 13, 2010, as reported by WHDH.

A 38-year-old Lynn, Mass. roofer was reportedly a part of a three-man crew who were working on the roof. Two people were on top of the roof, while the victim was on the ground loading materials onto their work truck at the time of the accident.

The workers were repairing a leaky roof when the accident occurred. The workers were apparently using a pulley and a bag of gravel as the weight, as they were lowering materials on the ground. The gravel bag somehow became loose and dropped 50 feet onto the victim’s head. The victim’s co-workers desperately tried to warn him, but they were unsuccessful.

The victim was tragically killed.

Sosa Construction Company, of Beverly, Mass. reportedly employed the victim at the time.

Officials with the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are investigating the fatal construction accident.
