Sturtevant, WI—BRP US Inc. and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission voluntarily recalled about 1,000 Ski-Doo® Snowmobiles on Thursday, Nov. 19, 2010. The Wisconsin-based importer initiated the recall upon discovering that the product has the potential to explode, posing a risk of serious injury or death to the consumer.

According to the CPSC news release, “Electrostatic changes can accumulate and spark in the fuel tank when the engine is left idling, posing an explosion hazard that could result in serious injuries or death… The firm has received three reports of explosions, one involving minor burns to face and hands.”

The following Ski-Doo® Snowmobiles are affected by the defective product recall:

The potentially hazardous snowmobiles were made available for purchase at Ski-Doo dealers nationwide between March 2004 and March 2010. Prices ranged from $9,000 to $10,000.

Consumers have been advised to stop using the recalled snowmobiles and contact any Ski-Doo dealer to schedule an appointment for a complimentary repair. The company had reportedly contacted registered owners and informed them of the recall via mail.

The news release noted, “All models already repaired under previous recalls due to laceration hazard from projectiles, fire hazard, or explosion must be repaired again.”

Consumers with additional questions or concerns are urged to contact BRP toll-free at (888) 638-5397 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., or visit the company’s Web site at www.ski-doo.com.
