Champaign County, OH—A violent ATV accident landed three teenage Urbana girls in the hospital with serious, but non-life threatening injuries. The ATV crash occurred in Champaign County around 5:30 p.m. Monday, November 8, 2010, according to information provided by WHIOTV.

Reports indicated three 15-year-old girls were riding an all-terrain vehicle in a bean field along Dialton Road when the ATV went through a ditch, causing the driver to lose control. The ATV subsequently overturned, ejecting the teens.

Emergency medical services (EMS) personnel were dispatched to the scene. Responders allegedly had a difficult time finding the injured teens, given that they had been riding the ATV far off the road.

The victims, identified as Amanda Pena, Shannon Slone and Regina Holmes, were flown to Miami Valley hospital via Careflight medical helicopter. The girls’ suffered serious injuries, though their wounds were not considered to be life threatening.

According to Champaign County Sheriff’s Sgt. Aaron Brown, the girls were not wearing helmets, nor were they legally permitted to ride the ATV due to their ages. Brown noted the three teens were also riding an ATV built for one person, adding, “This was basically a disaster waiting to happen.”

Reports stated the operator of the ATV could face criminal charges because she was riding on property that didn’t belong to her. Investigations continue.
