Chicago, IL—A violent hit-and-run accident on the morning of Nov. 2 left State Sen. Antonio Munoz’s younger brother with various injuries. The pedestrian-involved traffic crash occurred as Martin Munoz, 40, was en route to a Southwest Side poling place, according to information provided by the Chicago Tribune.

Eyewitness reports indicated Martin Munoz was crossing Archer Avenue when a southbound Nissan vehicle sped through the intersection of Archer and 40th Street, consequently slamming into him. The impact of the car, which was traveling at speeds of approximately 30 to 40 mph at the time, propelled Munoz into the air.

“I heard screeching, then I saw the victim hit by the car do two somersaults… He went up 15 to 20 feet,” said Robert Balzekas, who works at Balzekas Motor Sales in the Brighton Park neighborhood, where a polling place was being set up.

Sen. Antonio Munoz, D-Chicago, told reporters his brother was on his way to the polling place when the 6 a.m. hit-and-run crash occurred.

The senator alleged his brother was being treated for a broken right leg, which required surgery, as well as lacerations and head trauma. Martin Munoz is expected to be ok.

“When you first hear about it, not knowing the extent of the damage, (what) the injuries are… Then when you see him, swollen from his head, but thank God again there’s no internal injuries,” the senator added. “Everything that’s been told (to) me seems like a tragic accident,” he added.

The motorist suspected of leaving the scene of an accident with injury, whose identity was not released, was detained and questioned by police later on.

Reports stated an off-duty Cook County sheriff’s deputy witnessed the accident and followed the hit-and-run driver until he managed to take down the license plate number.

Investigations continue.
