San Francisco, CA—A $2,000 award is being offered for anyone who turns in the perpetrator or perpetrators who have put cut beer cans around the necks of innocent seagulls in the San Francisco Bay area, as reported by MSNBC.

At least two birds have already been spotted with these “collars” made of sharp metal. The birds were spotted in Half Moon Bay, Fisherman’s Warf and Alcatraz Island.

The WildRescue of Monterey, Calif. is calling this an act of torture.

“Instead of attempting to capture the birds, which can make them more wary and harder to catch, sightings should be reported immediately to a dedicated paging service 831-429-2323 or email [email protected],” advised WildRescue.

The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service has been alerted.

“This is federal crime punishable by severe fines, imprisonment, or both,” says WildRescues.
