Franklin County, PA—An elderly man was killed in a two-vehicle crash Saturday morning, November 13, 2010. The fatal rollover accident, which also left a passenger with severe injuries, occurred in St. Thomas Township around 8 p.m., according to information provided by WGAL.

Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) officials reported 70-year-old Leroy Kipe was driving his sport utility vehicle in the westbound lanes of Route 30 when he failed to stop at a red light. Upon doing so, Kipe’s SUV was hit by an oncoming car, causing it to overturn several times.

Kipe, who was ejected in the SUV rollover crash, suffered fatal injuries. His passenger, 39-year-old Weldon Kipe, sustained severe injuries and was ostensibly hospitalized. The 41-year-old woman who was driving the second vehicle did not suffer any wounds in the collision.

According to statistics provided through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) Encyclopedia, there were 1,143 fatal crashes reported throughout the state of Pennsylvania during the year 2009. A total of 1,256 traffic fatalities resulted from those accidents.

On a national basis, 30,797 fatal crashes occurred in the United States during the same year. A total of 33,808 traffic fatalities were reported.
