Piscataway Township, NJ—A Florham Park man was hospitalized after suffering critical injuries at Rutgers Stadium Saturday evening, November 13, 2010. An APP report indicated the victim fell down the stairs during the Scarlet Knights’ home game against the Syracuse University Orangemen.

Rutgers spokesman E.J. Miranda stated 20-year-old Nicholas Amabile was at the football game when he fell down a southern stairwell around 4:30 p.m., just moments before the game was set to go into halftime.

While Amabile remained hospitalized as of Sunday evening, Miranda contended an investigation into the incident, which was described as “accidental,” had been completed. Miranda added, “There’s no indication that there was any kind of a push.”

Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital’s public relations manager, Cheryl Sarfaty contended Amabile suffered a head injury when he fell down the stairs at Rutgers. It was not clear if he sustained a traumatic brain injury (TBI) in the accident.

According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) statistics provided by the Ohio State University Medical Center, 65 percent of injury-related deaths were classified as unintentional. Falls were ranked as the second leading cause of fatal unintentional injuries (14.8 percent), after car crashes (41.8 percent).

Miranda contended Amabile has “no apparent affiliation” with Rutgers University, noting that he appeared to have been simply watching the game at the time.
