Tampa, FL—Police charged a senior reliever for the University of South Florida Bulls baseball team Sunday, October 31, 2010, in connection with a hit-and-run accident that left a police officer injured. The baseball player was found at his apartment, located near the USF campus, around 30 minutes after the early morning crash occurred, according to information provided by the St. Petersburg Times.

Police reports indicated Kevin Quackenbush, 21, was driving his 2002 Dodge Ram when he failed to yield the right of way to a northbound police cruiser, driven by Officer David Michelson.

The marked cruiser overturned three times on impact of the collision, only coming to a rest in a nearby ditch. Michelson suffered a laceration to his head in the rollover accident. Quackenbush, on the other hand, fled the scene of the wreck.

Authorities found Quackenbush at his apartment around 3:30 a.m. The hit-and-run driver apparently confessed that he was driving, but claimed he “was scared” and left the scene.

Quackenbush was taken into custody, charged with a felony count of leaving the scene of an accident with injury and detained at a Hillsborough County jail. He posted $2,000 bail and was released Sunday morning.

According to reports, Quackenbush led the USF Bulls with a total of 25 appearances during the last baseball season. Nonetheless, baseball coach Lelo Prado stated Quackenbush was “immediately and indefinitely suspended from all team activities.”
