Bakersfield, CA—A violent head-on collision between a car and fire truck resulted in two fatalities October 7, 2010. The deadly emergency vehicle accident occurred around 8:02 p.m., according to a Kern County Fire Department news release provided by KGET. While no firefighters sustained injuries in the crash, two occupants of the car involved were not so fortunate. The wreck should come as a reminder of how tragic traffic accidents can truly be. Though no cause has been determined in connection with Thursday’s accident as of yet, countless motor vehicle collisions are caused by unnecessary distractions or mere negligence.

Seventeen firefighters from the Kern County Fire Department were dispatched to the scene of a crash involving one of the department’s fire engines Thursday night. Reports indicated a car was traveling eastbound on Highway 178 when it veered into oncoming traffic for unknown reasons. Upon doing so, the car slammed into a westbound ladder truck head-on. The fire truck was apparently en route from the scene of an incident in Kern Canyon when the fatal collision occurred east of Rancheria Road. Officials from the California Highway Patrol (CHP), Bakersfield Police Department and Kern County Sheriff’s Office, along with personnel from the Bakersfield Fire Department, also responded to the crash site. Two accident victims, both of whom were occupying the car involved, succumbed to their traumatic injuries at the scene.
