Cedar Falls, IA– A construction accident in Illinois left a Cedar Falls man dead on Wednesday, October 13, 2010. The worker was doing demolition work at a chemical plant near Jolie, Ill. when the accident occurred, as reported by WCF Courier.

The Will County (Ill.) Sheriff’s Office identified the victim as Timothy Shields, 46.

Officials reported that Shield was finishing some demolition work at the Oiltanking plant in Channahon, when the accident occurred at around 10:20 a.m. The victim and a Wood and Sons Construction worker were reportedly tearing down sections of an old truck weigh scale, when a 10-foot section of 1-inch rebar detached and hit Shields in the forehead, right underneath his hard hat.

Emergency crews rushed Shields was transported to Provena St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Joliet. Upon arriving, Shields was pronounced dead.

A full investigation into the fatal workplace accident is underway. Officials with the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are expected to conduct a full investigation.
