Buena Park, CA– For the second time in two years, patrons of Knott’s Berry Farm were injured during a roller coaster ride. On Thursday, October 7, 2010, 10 people were injured when one of the coaster cars failed to make it up an incline and subsequently rolled backwards, as reported by the Los Angeles Times.

Just before 8 p.m., the Pony Express ride failed to make it up an incline, which caused it to roll backwards and slam into another coaster car, which was waiting in the station. A total of 10 people, whose ages ranged from 12 to 60, sustained “minor” back and neck injuries in the accident.

Responding emergency crews rushed the victims to local hospitals with the use of six ambulances.

Officials say it is unknown what caused the malfunction. Thee ride, which opened in 2008, has not had any previous problems.

As previously reported in “Knott’s Berry Farm rollercoaster injures 2,”on September 16, 2009, a cable on the Xcelerator roller coaster came loose and struck a 12-year-old boy in the leg, which left him with a cut where the cable hit him. Another man also sustained back and neck injuries.

Earlier this year, Cal/OSHA faulted Knott’s Berry Farm for the 2009 accident, citing that the accident could have been prevented if the ride was properly maintained, as reported in “Buena Park CA injury news: Knott’s Berry Farm, manufacturer faulted for accident.”

Knott released a statement regarding the state’s report, which “identified shortcomings in the manufacturer’s instructions regarding the inspection and maintenance of the cable” and that the state agency had “required Knott’s Berry Farm to put into place additional safeguards to determine cable viability and to work with the manufacturer to revise maintenance instructions.”
