Benton Harbor Workplace Death: Meeks Construction Worker Killed by Support Beam

Benton Harbor, MI— A worker was killed after a support beam collapsed, causing the Benton Harbor man to fall from his ladder on Wednesday, September 22, 2010. The fatal construction accident occurred at a building slated to be demolished at 267 Territorial Road in Benton Harbor at around 3:30 p.m., as reported by WSBT.

The Benton Harbor Fire Department reported that a 47-year-old worker was was cleaning the piping, wiring and electrical conduit out of the building, when a support beam suddenly fell. The beam took out his 12-foot ladder from underneath him, causing the worker to fall onto acetylene tanks, which left him with internal injuries.

Two other employees who were working with the victim were uninjured in the accident.

Responding emergency crews administered CPR to the victim at the scene, but their efforts proved unsuccessful. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim was reportedly employed by Meeks Construction.

Benton Harbor police are investigating the workplace accident. Officials with the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are also expected to conduct an investigation as well.
