Berlin, Germany—A bus crash on a freeway in the southeast of Berlin Sunday, September 26, 2010 claimed the lives of 13 Polish tourists. As of Monday, 32 of 48 additional victims hurt in the crash remained hospitalized for their injuries, according to information provided by NPR.

Reports indicated a tour bus was en route from Spain to Poland when it collided with a car, which was entering the German highway at the time. The impact consequently sent the bus careening into a bridge abutment.

Dahme-Spreewald police spokeswoman Bettina Schramm alleged 18 people were seriously injured in the bus crash. Another 20 victims also reportedly suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Emergency medical personnel rushed the injured tourists to hospitals between Berlin and Leipzig for treatment. Their conditions remained unknown.

According to tour organizer Ewa Kramek, “Our bus was going straight on the highway and then from around a curve a red car came suddenly.”

“Our driver was trying to avoid it, to escape to the left side. We were under an overpass, and then it hit hard on the left side,” Kramek added.

The 37-year-old female driver of the car involved suffered unspecified injuries in the collision. The motorist’s identity was not released.

It was also unknown whether she was cited in connection with the fatal German bus crash.

Approximately 100 family members of the victims involved in the crash traveled to Koenigs Wusterhausen, located outside Berlin, upon learning of the accident.

The people aboard the wrecked bus originated from the Polish town of Ziocieniec. According the town’s deputy mayor, Piotr Antonczak, the victim’s family members arrived in Germany to learn the fate of their loved ones.
