Union County, NC—A North Carolina State Highway Patrol trooper was hospitalized after his patrol car rolled over while en route to the location of a pursuit Saturday, September 18, 2010. The trooper’s patrol vehicle reportedly overturned at some point during the chase, which occurred on Lawyers Road near the town of Unionville, according to information provided by WBTV.

Reports indicated NCSHP Trooper B.L. Baucom was on his way to the site of a pursuit when he lost control of his patrol vehicle. Upon doing so, the patrol car apparently flipped on a roadway between Highway 200 and Skyes Mill Road.

While the trooper was rushed to Carolinas Medical Center-Union to be treated for non-life threatening injuries, he has since been released.

According to Jenny Wedderston, who was visiting family residing near the crash scene, “We heard sirens and screeching tires, and we heard a big crash so we ran out and saw a big cloud of smoke.”

“We ran towards it just to make sure that whoever was in the car was OK, and we happened to see that it was a state trooper. He got out of the car and he seemed to be alright, slightly disoriented, but other than that, OK,” Wedderston added.

Several other troopers apparently continued to chase the red pickup truck, whose driver refused to pull over for unknown reasons. While the truck did eventually come to a stop, its occupants subsequently fled the scene.

Officials have not detained the truck’s occupants as of yet. Additionally, reports did not specify how NCSHP Trooper Baucom lost control of his patrol car, causing it to flip.
