Clearwater, FL—An early morning accident left a motorcyclist with serious injuries Monday, September 20, 2010. A car and motorcycle were involved in the violent collision, which occurred in close proximity to the intersection of State Road 590 and Leonard Drive, according to information provided by the St. Petersburg Times.

Reports indicated a motorcyclist was operating his bike when a car turned in front of it. The victim’s motorcycle seemingly smashed into the vehicle, causing him to suffer severe injuries. The motorcycle operator’s identity has yet to be released.

The motorcyclist was not wearing a helmet at the time, likely contributing to the severity of his/her injuries. Emergency medical services (EMS) personnel rushed the injured rider to Bayfront Medical Center to be treated for his crash-induced injuries.

While details regarding the collision were scarce, a full investigation into the 4:45 a.m. motorcycle wreck was expected to be underway.

According to data provided through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) Encyclopedia, 5,312 motorcyclists were killed in U.S. traffic accidents during the year 2008. Of those fatalities, 556 were killed while riding motorcycles in the state of Florida.
