Colorado Springs, CO—A helicopter crashed west of Colorado Springs Friday, September 17, 2010, leaving four people with injuries ranging from minor to serious. The horrific aviation accident occurred while an Audi film crew was filming a test on Pikes Peak, as reported by the New York Times.

According to Brad Stertz, a spokesperson for Audi, “The film crew was shooting a test run of the ‘Autonomous Audi TTS Pikes Peak,’ a joint program involving Audi, the Electronic Research Laboratory in Palo Alto, Calif., and Stanford University.”

“The goal of the project involves ascending Pikes Peak autonomously without a driver behind the wheel to demonstrate the capabilities of advanced driver assistance systems and GPS,” Stertz added.

At some point during the crew’s filming session, their helicopter went down. The helicopter reportedly crashed approximately one mile below the summit of Pikes Peak.

Emergency medical services (EMS) crews were seemingly dispatched to the scene after the injurious helicopter wreck occurred. Four people were aboard the aircraft at the time.

Reports indicated the unidentified pilot of the helicopter was the most seriously injured. The pilot was flown to an area hospital to be treated for his injuries. At last check, the pilot was listed in “good” condition.

Three others suffered injuries, which were described as minor. They were not hospitalized for their injuries, according to Stertz.

Audi’s research program has been suspended pending further investigations into Friday’s helicopter crash. Officials from the El Paso County Sheriff’s Department and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are expected to conduct a full probe into the aviation accident.
