Washington, D.C.—The Tootsie Tanner portable foot tanning device was recalled by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) over the risk of ultraviolent radiation overdose. The FDA announced the recall on August 24, 2010.

The Tootsie Tanner can cause an overdose of ultraviolet radiation due to the labeling instructions, which recommend a prolonged duration of exposure to radiation. The foot tanner also has an inadequate timer. According to FDA testing, the maximum exposure time under the foot tanner is 20 minutes, while the timer on the tanning machine allows for 30 minutes and states it may be used for 30 minutes.

In addition, the foot tanner fails to provide substantial warnings about the use of protective eyewear. An overdose of radiation can lead to immediate and delayed serious eye and skin injuries.

The FDA sent a warning letter to the device manufacturer and distributor, IPCH, but since issuing the letter the manufacturer is longer in business. Therefore the tanning device will not be replaced or updated with the correct labeling and information. There will be no refunds for the 3,000 devices sold.

Tannin salon owners and operators are advised to stop using this device and to remove lamps.

There have been no adverse reports concerning the Tootsie Tanner.
