Indian River County, FL—Deputies arrested a homeless couple Sunday morning, August 29, 2010, after they were found “passed-out” in a hot car with their 1-month-old child. The infant was hospitalized for dehydration after the incident, according to information provided by WPTV.

An anonymous caller reportedly told 911 dispatchers that she/he noticed the driver of a black Chevrolet Impala drifting off behind the wheel. An Indian River County Sheriff’s deputy eventually found the vehicle parked at the KOA campground on County Road 512, in close proximity to Interstate 95.

The deputy discovered the 20-year-old driver, Justina Sullivan, asleep in the car, along with 24-year-old Nicholas Roberts and their 1-month-old baby. The infant reportedly appeared “clammy” and was subsequently rushed to an area hospital.

Affidavits listed both Sullivan and Roberts as homeless. The pair contended they had been evicted from their Fort Pierce home on Saturday. The affidavits also stated the arresting officers found 75 oxycodone pills inside the couple’s car.

While the couple alleged another party had given the drugs to them, they were charged with possession of a controlled substance and child abuse. Roberts and Sullivan were booked into Indian River County Jail on $20,000 bond each.

Reports did not specify who would be caring for the child.
