South Bend, IN—The South Bend Chocolate Company, in cooperation with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), voluntarily recalled 174 1-Ib bags of Bountiful Blend chocolate-covered fruit and nut mix due to allergen hazards associated with the product. The FDA announced the food safety recall on Friday, August 6, 2010, after it was discovered that the packaging failed to list cashews, almonds, pecans and Brazil nuts as ingredients.

Consumers with allergies or serious food sensitivities to cashews, almonds, pecans and/or Brazil nuts are at risk of suffering a severe or even potentially lethal allergic reaction if they ingest the recalled Bountiful Blend. The company has not received any reports of illnesses as of yet.

According to the FDA news release, “The Bountiful Blend product impacted by the recall is sold under The South Bend Chocolate Company brand name and was produced on or after March 18, 2010. The product under recall is: Bountiful Blend in 1-lb Bags. Products with labels reading Item #154,UPC #644823001549 are subject to this recall.”

The mislabeled packages of Bountiful Blend, which is described as a mixture of chocolate covered nuts and dried fruits, were made available for purchase via the Internet, mail order, and possible retail stores throughout the nation.

After discovering that the Bountiful Blend packaging lacked a complete ingredient list, an investigation was conducted. The probe found that the ingredient list was cut off before the section listing cashews, almonds, pecans and Brazil nuts as ingredients printed onto the product’s packaging.

Consumers, particularly those with allergies or food sensitivities to the listed nuts, have been urged to return the product to the place of purchase for a full reimbursement. For more information concerning the food safety recall, consumers may feel free to contact The South Bend Chocolate Company at (574) 233-2577 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET.
