Baton Rouge, LA—An unfortunate traffic accident claimed the life of a 1-year-old girl around 8:30 p.m. Sunday night, July 11, 2010. While the driver of the car involved was not charged, investigations into the fatal crash were expected to be underway, according to information provided by WAFB Channel 9.

Reports indicated there were several children playing and amusing themselves, under the supervision of adults, Sunday night. They were all situated in the fenced-in backyard in the 9900 block of West Tams Drive, when a seemingly curious tot managed to wander away from the group unnoticed.

The toddler, identified as Nubia Hernandez, somehow managed to meander away from the supervising adults and out of the gated yard. While it remained unknown where the gate was open or Hernandez unlatched it on her own, the results were tragic.

The young girl apparently walked across the front yard of the house, eventually landing in the road where she was consequently run over by a car.

Emergency medical services (EMS) personnel subsequently rushed the child to Baton Rouge Medical Center Mid-City. However, her traumatic injuries proved fatal at the hospital.

According to officials from the Baton Rouge Police Department (BRPD), those at the scene alleged they didn’t notice Hernandez had left the fenced-in yard. The probe continues.
