Product Recall: Sony recalls 233,000 notebook computers

San Diego, CA—The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Sony Electronics Inc. has voluntarily recalled about 233,000 notebook computers. The recall was initiated because the notebook computers can overheat, posing a burn hazards to the consumer.
At this time Sony has received 30 reports of the computers overheating, which caused the keyboards and casings to deform. No injuries have been reported.
The CPSC stated, “The recalled products are VPCF11 Series and VPCCW2 Series notebook computers. The computers are available in many colors and have ‘VAIO’ on the front outside panel. The model numbers can be found on the bottom of the computers.”

The recalled computers were sold at Best Buy, Costco, Frys, Amazon.com and Sony Style retail stores and sonystyle.com, in addition to other electronic retailers and business suppliers nationwide.
Consumers are advised to go to http://esupport.sony.com/US/f1cw2update to get instructions on how to update the computer’s BIOS firmware. Call Son or visit Sony Style retail stores nationwide for help with installing the update that will prevent the computer from overheating. The update will also be accessible through the VAIO Update software program installed on the recalled notebook computers. A prompt will appear when users log on.
