Sioux Falls, SD—An accident at Leif Ericson Day Camp sent eight kids to the hospital when a horse spooked and ran off, causing a chain reaction among the other horses. The accident occurred around 1:00 p.m., which left one child unconscious, as reported by the Argus Leader.

Officials reported that a group of 11 girls were out horseback riding when one of the horses got spooked and started running, bucking the rider off. She was knocked unconscious. That caused the other horses to take off as well.

Sioux Falls Fire Rescue was called to the scene for the child who was bucked off, but after arriving they had to call for additional help. Seven children were taken by ambulance to area hospital for treatment. One camper was transported by her parents to the hospital.

The ages and identities of the victims are unknown. They are all believed to be campers at Leif Ericson.

The camp staff notified parents of the incident. They are also reviewing their response to the accident in order to determine if they need to do anything different to prevent a similar situation from occurring.
