Tioga County, PA—Two workers were airlifted from an Ultra Resources natural gas well in Gaines Township, after experiencing a problem with the equipment. The accident occurred on Friday, June 18, 2010 at a site off Lick Run Road at around 11 a.m., as reported by the Sun Gazette.

According to officials, two workers were airlifted to Robert Packer Hospital for treatment of a head injury and broken ribs. One worker was reportedly hit on the head by a piece of metal, which caused a skull laceration. He was knocked-out for several minutes, but he came around and was conscious when he was loaded into the aircraft. The second worker sustained the broken ribs.

The Department of Environmental Protection’s North Central region director Nels Taber stated, “ The cause of the blow-out was probably excessive pressure in the hammer union, but really the question will be was whether the union was installed properly or if the failure was due a manufacturing defect. We don’t know that yet.” Apparently a pipe coupling separated and injured the two workers.

The identities of the workers and their conditions are currently being withheld. Officials with the U.S. Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) are expected to conduct a full investigation.
