San Diego, CA—Bayside Furnishings, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), voluntarily recalled approximately 2,000 “Pirates of the Caribbean” Twin Trundle Beds. The CPSC announced the recall on Tuesday, June 8, 2010, with regard to an entrapment hazard the product may pose.

Reports indicated the bed’s headboard has a storage bin, which has the potential to entrap young children sleeping in them. Bayside Furnishings, a subsidiary of Whalen, received one report of a child suffering injuries due to the problem. In that case, a 4-year-old boy suffered bruises on his ears after his head became stuck in the opening of the storage bin.

According to the CPSC, “This recall involves the Bayside youth bed: the Pirates of the Caribbean Twin Trundle Bed. The preassembled headboard has a brown wood base with decorative carvings, three open storage compartments, a storage bin and a mast. The storage bin located in the headboard, measures approximately 39 inches long, 6 1/2 inches wide and 24 inches deep. The “Pirates of the Caribbean” trademark is embossed on a metal plate inside the headboard. The name and address of the manufacturer, model number, manufacture date and “Made in China” is printed on a label affixed to the inside of the mattress frame side rails.”

The defective “Pirates of the Caribbean” Twin Trundle Beds were sold at Costco stores nationwide from January 2006 to January 2010. Prices ranged from $700 to $1,400. The recalled beds were manufactured in China.

Consumers who purchased the risky “Pirates of the Caribbean” Twin Trundle Beds have been urged to cease use of the bed’s storage bin and contact Bayside Furnishings to receive a complimentary repair kit. The repair kit will permanently seal the headboard storage bin, though it will take four to six weeks to mail them to consumers.

Bayside Furnishings can be reached toll-free at (877) 494-2536 any day between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. PT for more information concerning the product safety recall. Consumers may also refer to the company’s Web site at www.BaysideFurnishings.com.
