New York, NY—The son of famed broadcast journalist, Ted Koppel, was found dead early Monday morning, June 1, 2010 after what police say was a “daylong drinking binge.” Police rushed to a Washington Heights apartment on Audobon Avenue around 1:30 a.m., where they found Andrew Koppel unconscious, as reported by the New York Daily News and the New York Post.

The exact cause of the 40-year-old’s death has yet to be determined. Police officials are awaiting he autopsy results before citing a cause.

According to sources, Koppel began drinking at Smith’s Bar and Restaurant in Manhattan sometime Sunday afternoon. Koppel reportedly met a man at a bar, who then continued to drink with Koppel at several other bars around the area. Later on, Koppel and a man went back to the Washington Heights apartment.

Koppel lived in Queens with his girlfriend and daughter.

The New York Post reported that Russell Wimberly was the one drinking with Koppel throughout the night. Wimberly stated that Koppel was drinking whiskey and that neither one of them had anything to eat all day long.

Wimberly said that they both went to the apartment that belonged to Wimberly’s friend, where they told Koppel to sleep off his drunken state. Sometime after they discovered that Koppel had gotten sick and wasn’t breathing. Both Wimberly and the apartment owner then allegedly called 911.

Investigators reported that there were no immediate signs of criminality, but drugs and/or alcohol are suspected to be contributing factors.

A full investigation into the tragic death is currently underway.
